How does xPON differ from EPON/GPON?

How does xPON differ from EPON/GPON?

The EPON OLT is a device serving as the endpoint for the service provider in a passive optical network. In other words, the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) manages the Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON). This technology offers multiple services thanks to its point-to-multipoint passive optical transmission.

GPON is known for its high bandwidth, its ability to provide multiple services and its breadth of coverage. It is often seen as the perfect technology to ensure full access to broadband networks. Its download and upload speeds can reach 2,5 Gbps and 1,25 Gbps respectively.

On the other hand, EPON complies with the IEEE standard for Ethernet. It supports 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps transmissions, and has the advantage of being more economical than GPON.

However, in the face of technological developments and changing market needs, xPON is emerging. The introduction of xPON marks a notable difference, facilitating the transition from EPON to GPON, which is very beneficial for users.

1. What is xPON?

xPON is a fusion of GPON and EPON technologies, both in hardware and software.

On the hardware side, GPON has higher upstream and downstream speeds than EPON. Thanks to its backward compatibility, the network mode of GPON is often considered the gold standard for hardware indicators. For example, just like GPON, it supports a multitude of services, such as TDM, ATM, Ethernet and CATV. In addition, it ensures a guarantee of quality of service.

On the software side, an automatic detection and switching function is integrated. When an ONU accesses the network, EPON/GPON OLTs transmit the corresponding packets. If the ONU fails to align with OLT mode, packets cannot be processed correctly. In such a situation, the xPON ONU restarts autonomously and switches to the other mode within a few seconds. Once the switch is made, a recording is made to confirm the transition.

2. Compared with GPON/EPON, what is the advantage of xPON?

Comparative analysis between GPON and EPON reveals advantages and disadvantages for each of these technologies. However, instead of dwelling on these two options, it now makes more sense to opt for xPON. Indeed, xPON is able to automatically recognize these two standards and switch between them as needed.

Additionally, xPON offers an integrated network management platform. It meets a variety of business requirements, supporting a full range of services, including ATM, Ethernet and TDM, while ensuring impeccable quality of service (QoS). It also allows downstream cable television broadcasting using WDM technology.

It is also worth noting that the popularity of GPON is constantly increasing. In this context, xPON represents a cost-effective solution for those considering replacing their EPON infrastructure with GPON.

3. Application of xPON

In response to evolving market needs, ELFCAM has designed a range of xPON ONUs capable of supporting dual modes (EPON and GPON). Here are four of their flagship products:

1. 1GE Secure ONU

  • Application: Suitable for a wide range of temperatures.
  • Security: Featuring an advanced firewall feature.
  • Compatibility: Works with popular OLTs including those from Huawei and ZTE.

2. ONU 1GE+1FE+CATV+WiFi

  • features: Designed to meet the needs of telecom operators for tri-network integration and FTTH.
  • Compatibility: Fully compatible with OLTs using Broadcom, PMC and Cortina chipsets.

3. 2GE+1POTS+ac WiFi+CATV HGU

  • features: Supports IPv4 and IPv6 dual stacks, SIP protocol and NAT.
  • Maintenance : Enables remote configuration and maintenance using OAM and OMCI.

4. 2GE+1POTS+1USB+ac WiFi Mesh ONU

  • Wi-Fi: Incorporates Wi-Fi CERTIFIED EasyMesh™, optimizing the connection of devices to the AP providing the best Wi-Fi service.

xPON's strengths, such as its exceptional reliability, intuitive management and flexible configuration, have earned it increasing recognition. It is expected to establish itself as a major reference in the fiber access sector, whether for individuals or businesses (FTTH, FTTP and FTTC). Whether xPON or GPON/EPON, the key is to choose the solution that best meets your needs.
