What is GPON (GPON networks)?

1. What is GPON (GPON networks)?

The meaning of GPON is “Gigabit Passive Ethernet Network”. Passive Optical Network (PON) is a system that delivers fiber optic cabling signals to the home or business (FTTx) with point-to-multipoint architecture. It allows users to access video, audio, internet data, etc. There are many different PON standards and GPON is exactly one of them. It was first proposed by the FSAN and completed in 2004.

Main features:

① The upstream and downstream speed is 1,2Gbps and 2,4Gbps.

② It protects user data securely and privately via encryption.

③ Triple-play services: VoIP, Data and IPTV

④ Long range coverage can reach 20km.

2. How does GPON work?

GPON FTTH access network is composed of optical line terminal (OLT), optical splitter and optical network terminal (ONT). GPON can transmit Ethernet, TDM (Time Division Multiplexing), and ATM traffic. The OLT is responsible for converting optical signals into electrical signals and presenting them to a central Ethernet switch. Optical splitter is used to divide the signal power. The ONT is deployed at the customer's premises. It will receive the signal sent by the optical splitter or return the signals to the OLT.

3. Why choose GPON networks?

GPON is a point-to-multipoint technology instead of a point-to-point technology, which is superior to point-to-point Ethernet connections. This feature helps reduce costs. With the development of technology, FTTx is the best choice that can meet users' needs. Compared to copper, there is less interference and it is safer. As for the difference between GPON and EPON, GPON is a better choice for those who care more about bandwidth, quality of service and security.

4. Application of GPON

In accordance with the demand of FTTx and the GPON network standard, ELFCAM has developed a series of GPON routers including GPON ONU/ONT and GPON OLT. There are several types of GPON devices for different needs and scenarios to provide services such as WiFi, CATV, VOIP, etc.
